About The Stone Soup Leadership Institute

Our world is in urgent need of new leadership, innovative thinking, and action-oriented people who can work together to effectively build a more sustainable world. For over 20 years, The Institute has worked alongside those on the front lines of resiliency and climate change, social justice and economic equity: from inner cities to rural islands. We’ve inspired thousands of multicultural youth to get involved with local, national and global sustainability initiatives.  The Institute’s book and educational curriculum Stone Soup for the World: Life-Changing Stories of Everyday Heroes gives life to the well-known Stone Soup fable. Over 120 communities use it to inspire people to take initiative in their communities.   Founded in 1997, the Institute is a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

The Institute has hosted 14 Sustainability Summits in 2 countries and 4 unique communities: Vieques, PR, Virgin Gorda, BVI, Martha’s Vineyard and Newport, RI with youth delegates representing over 40 communities.  We’ve organized 13 Sustainability Tours to see first-hand the fragility of our eco-systems and discover innovative solutions.  We’ve synthesized lessons learned, developed a grassroots model and exchange innovative solutions and build resilient communities.  We’ve developed eight youth-community leadership initiatives with islands of Massachusetts, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, British Virgin Islands and programs inner cities of Boston, Cincinnati and Oakland.

We’ve developed three Sustainable Vision for 2020 Reports, one presented to Hawaii Governor for President Obama for Climate Preparedness & Resiliency; one at the Walter Cronkite Awards Ceremony on Martha’s Vineyard. We’ve represented at sustainability events including Secretary of State John Kerry’s Ocean Summit: 2014. Our youth have designed digital Sustainability tools that address the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We’ve conducted 3 BETA sites for the digital tools:  Sustainable Hawaii Toolkit, Virtual Field Station and The Institute’s TouchStone Leaders Platform’s Life Planning Tools: Dream Map.

The Institute is a leader in custom designing workforce development initiatives in partnership with companies, Chambers of Commerce, schools, colleges and organizations. We are aligned with the Green New Deal, committed to helping build a blue-green workforce for a resilient, sustainable economy.  We’ve used theHealthy Communities process and Design Thinking tools to collaborate with businesses, economic development departments and Chambers of Commerce in these communities. These collaborations have resulted multi-faceted programs that address environmental challenges of the 21st century. We’ve worked with leaders from business, education, government, and communities to envision sustainable career pathways.  The Institute’s Career Mentor & Job Shadow Day Programs and College Prep Programs train them to blue-green workforce.  We’ve seen green-blue companies thrive when they invest in mentoring local youth.
